SG English Faculty in partnership with SG library Accelerated Reader Programme

Accelerated Reader 360

As you know, reading is one of the most important skills children will ever learn. A child who reads frequently and those that grow to enjoy reading, excel in school.

With this in mind, the English Faculty at Mulberry Stepney Green in partnership with the Mulberry Stepney Green school library have teamed up to provide the Accelerated Reader programme (AR) for Years 7 – 10 since January 2015.

Accelerated Reader (AR): How it Works

It is a computer based reading programme that helps teachers manage and monitor a child’s reading practice. Your child picks a book at his own reading level and reads it at his pace. When finished, your child takes a quiz on the computer. Passing the quiz is an indication that your child has understood what he has read.

What is a book level?

The book level is the difficulty of a text. The levels range from 0.0 to 6.0. For your child’s BL (book level), please look at the designated pages inside the planners for AR from September 2015-2016.

Did you know:

1. Boys who use AR (50.3%) are more likely to enjoy reading than boys who do not (39.5%).
2. Boys using AR (68.9 %) read more frequently than boys not using AR (56.6%)
3. Young people that use AR enjoy reading more; are more likely to read more frequently and are reading a greater variety of books. They are also more likely to believe that reading is enjoyable compared to those that do not use AR.

AR at SG is an individualized reading program for students which allow English teachers to set targets, track progress and monitor reading comprehension. We have thousands of AR quizzes available at Stepney Green and over 10,000 books. The book levels range from 0.0 to 6.0 so we have a wide variety of books for all levels for students to select. We encourage students to choose books within their reading level that are of interest to them. Accelerated Reading is a wonderful tool for allowing this love of reading to happen.

If you have any questions about the Accelerated Reader Program, please do not hesitate to contact the librarian or your child’s English teacher for more information.
